I'm trying to update my ipad to the new op system 5.1.1. Current o.s. is 4.whatever. My laptop is a 5 year old Dell Vostro 1000 with Windows XP and Kaspersky security. When I plug in the ipad and go to itunes, I can sync just fine. When I then try to update to the new o.s., the process starts for a few minutes, then I get the message "unable to backup files." I've tried with security on and with it off, but I can't get anywhere beyond this message. The other odd thing is that when I first tried to do it, I could see the progress at the top of the itunes page. Now, I get a Microsoft progress window pop up across the itunes page that shows my download progress, instead of itunes showing my progress. I'm wondering if I need to disable something on my laptop. Anybody have any ideas? Otherwise, I may have to get a "Genius" appointment at my local Apple store.....I'd rather not subject myself to such ironic unpleasantness.

You may have a corrupt backup. The best thing to do, in that case, is to delete all backups relating to your iPad and then make a new one.

To do: In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Devices. Select the backup(s) that pertain to your iPad and delete them all. Then, connect your iPad and make another backup.

After that is done, try the upgrade process again. Hopefully, it'll work this time.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
