Upgrade IOS 4 to 5 or 6

I am helping a friend with her iPad 2 model MC774X. We tried to download iBooks but it says we must have IOS 5. Her iPad is still on IOS 4. Her Settings are not indicating that an upgrade is available. How can we upgrade the operating system? She does not have iTunes on her home computer; would that be the way to do it?

Given that her iPad is still on iOS 4, yes, you will need to use iTunes [the most current version] to upgrade that iPad. Once the iPad is on iOS 6.1.3, then you won't need a computer to do the updates; they can be done over-the-air (OTA). and, you will have to upgrade to iOS 6.1.3 as its the most current and only iOS supported by Apple.

Make sure you make a back-up in iTunes before you start the upgrade process. It is a big jump to go two major iOS versions - so it may take a while to do.

Hope this clarifies.
