I just was given a first gen. iPad which I'm not complaining about but I wanted to know if it's still a quality product. I have been messing around with it and have had it crash on apps randomly. I tried shutting it down and it will still happen. Just wanted more info on my newly acquired iPad.

Yes it is, managing the apps that are running will alleviate the so called crashing which is when an app runs out of resources, IE: memory
If you read through the forum you will find tips on how to do this.
