I am hoping to jailbreak my iPad 2 soon, but before I do, I would like to know the risks. Maybe some tips on what NOT to do when jailbreaking.

Well, you've already found your way to the hacking section thanks to leelai, and you've been pointed towards our overview jailbreaking thread. After that you might like to try to look at this one to see whether or not your current device and version of IOS can be jailbroken at the moment - http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/24377-jailbreaking-methods-ipad.html
and then move onto here to get some ideas of what can be done once jailbroken - http://www.ipadforums.net/jailbreak-applications-tweaks/25824-ultimate-list-jailbreak-tweaks.html
then you may like to look at the sub-forums Jailbreak Applications & Tweaks, then iPad Themes, and finally Jailbreaking & Hacking Tutorials & How-To Guides

As regards the risks, there is nothing you can do to your iPad whilst jailbroken that places you device at any risk. The jailbreak can always be removed by restoring your device in iTunes. A restore will remove all traces that your device was ever jailbroken. What you will have to be careful of is not installing anything via Cydia which was not designed for the iPad. See our guide here - http://www.ipadforums.net/jailbreak...ydia-beginners-guide-jailbreak-app-store.html
If you do get into trouble and have to restore then you may lose your ability to jailbreak for a whilst as you will be forced to restore to 5.1 and there is no jailbreak released for 5.1 on iPad2 or iPad3 yet. And just as when you are in a non-jailbroken state, you should ensure you are performing regular backups either using iCloud or iTunes, whichever is your preference. Being jailbroken does not prevent you from doing any of the things you normally do, nor should it change your normal practices.

Hope that helps.

Just now the only thing you're going to avoid is to not get your iPad in the state where the only possible way to recover will be update to 5.1. But, to be truth - the only thing you can loose is wright now jail break ability. So I think - read carefully everything you can find on this forum and go on. Good luck.

Thanks guys! It seems that the moderators here are really on top of things. Whenever I have iPad questions, I will no longer turn to Google for answers!

The jail broken iPad is buggier in my experience(I get crashes), and it takes forever for a new jailbreak to come out when iOS is updated.

Keep in mind that when you jailbreak things DO go wrong more often than when you do not. If you like to fiddle around with your devices to get them to work, then have fun. If you just want to use them, be aware you may end up back here asking many more questions about why something is not working like you expected on a jail broken device.

That's fine as long as you use the search function before making a new thread. If you already know this, please see this as a gentle reminder.
