If you're interested in the most popular apps from a statistical perspective then the App Store has a 'Top Charts' section (button at the bottom of the page) that lists

(a) Top paid-for apps - by number
(b) Top free apps - by number
(c) Top grossing apps

I guess you probably didn't mean this - so please accept my apologies - but it's an interesting 'chart' nonetheless.
