What does 'free' actually mean?

Hello all out there. I've recently purchased an ipad 3 and was attracted to the newsstand feature where publications and pdf files etc. can be stored. However, after having selected a couple of publications that were 'free' (Sunday Times and Cycling Weekly) find that I cannot seem to access the content without paying! Hence my question...........! Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you

Well, but the strictest description it means the app itself is "free to download" as opposed to "pay before you can download".

Since it is possible for an app which is "free to download" to then offer the content within the app via "in app purchases", folks can get annoyed.

In general with the vast majority of magazines, you will find the app is free to download, but you have to purchase the magazine editions. And many (such as the TImes) may offer a trial period.

The apps are free. The content rarely is.
