Is it possible to download what's app to I pad without connecting to laptop? My laptop needs renewing and I have very little space on it so I think it will tell me I have not enough room to put a new app on it

There is no Whatsapp app for the iPad. Check the App Store.

Just for clarity, Whatsapp is not supported for IPad and iPod as it is classed as a telephony service. With many iPads being wifi only, there is too many variables for the developers to get the app to work reliably on those platforms.
