You can watch .wmv files on your iPad - with the proper app. I personally use OPlayerHD and yxplayer2 with no problems. I am sure there are more ... and a search of this forum would have revealed that....
Don't throw the iPad under the bus just yet - there generally is a reason why the phrase "there's an app for that" is true.

P.S. And, to be fair, there are a lot of files that Microsoft/Windows machines can't play natively either - you have to buy or download software also. It's not just Apple...
