I just bought a ipad2 from a friend it was brand new in a box unopened he won it,anyway can anyone tell me what network sim it takes ie Vodafone,3,O2 etc someone said it takes them all but find that hard to believe

It's true. All the main uk networks offer iPad contract or payg deals, just like they do for the iPhone.

Same here Australia, we can use any of the telcos sims
