As now got a small red circle with the number1 in it however when I open the icon nothing there but apps to buy---what's that all about?

it usually means there are updates for purchased apps.

Thanks got it, if you don't wish to update will it stay as a red dot ?

you're welcome,yes it will stay like that but the number will increase as updates become available for other apps you have......im up to 56,i really must update mine

If you tap the updates button in the bottom right corner it will show you which apps are ready for an update.
