Tthe App Store debuted along with iOS 2.0.1 back in August, 2008 with a total of about 500 apps, and now according to current appshopper.com statistics, the platform now hosts over 1.5 million apps.

According to the source, it seems that this number only includes currently active projects. But if we count all the withdrawn apps, we get an even more-impressive number - more than 2.3 million apps.

The 1.5 million apps are split between iPhone and iPad, with 1,008,031being iPhone apps and 479,857 apps made for iPad users. The iPad apps have been developed specifically for the larger display, with games, business and professional applications becoming quite popular among iPad users.

It's worth pointing out, however, that more than half of all iPhone apps work on the iPad, as there are around 544,716 universal apps on the iOS App Store. Another interesting stat is that the 1.5 million apps have been downloaded over three billion times. Furthermore, Apple has paid out over $20 billion to app developers since 2008, with over half of that amount sent in the past 12 months.
