Hi,

I just got my iPad a few weeks ago and it's running on iOS 4.2.

I heard that it's possible to have applications installed without having to jailbreak the unit? Is it possible? I have no idea about it but my best guess as a follow up question is - Would it be possible to share paid apps?

TIA! :)

Without being jail broken, the ONLY place to buy apps is by using the App Store app on your iPad or through iTunes on your PC.

1991-C4 is 100% spot on.
Jailbreaking provides root access to IOS as its most basic feature. Without root access you simply CANNOT install any non-standard app. Therefore it is not possible under any circumstances to install anything which is not int the app store unless you are jailbroken.
The only variable is the potential for different jailbreak methods...

There is mention of apps that run in the safari browser. I haven't tried them but saw them posted in a UK magazine. The site sited was openappmkt.com. You can buy apps just as in the itunes store apparently.

Web apps were the original model for iPod Touch & iPhone apps way before there was an app store. However they are somewhat limited because of IOS sandboxing and the fact they must run in Safari...

Had my iPad installed at a shop for 10$. 154 paid applications were installed. I think they just shared their applications in iTunes.

Wow. Highly illegal... Don't fancy their chances much if the authorities get wind. Charging folks for a jailbreak in a shop (even just for the "service") whilst also supplying paid for software to which the recipient is not entitled is just asking for trouble...
