There should be no problem, since the latest supported iOS upgrade for the iPad 1 is iOS 5.1.1, which is jailbreakable. You will have to do the update through iTunes on your computer as, OTA updates are not supported below iOS 5.

Hi there and welcome.

There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.

Remember, search is your friend. If you can't find the answer you need and you post a question then give as much info as you can to help members help you i.e. iPad 1 or 2, etc. and iOS version and name of app if the problem is with a specific app........and please don't forget to read the forum rules http://www.ipadforums.net/forum-rules-help-info/2119-forum-rules-everybody-please-read.html

These are the hacking section rules for all you jail breakers (and would be jail breakers) http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2892-hacking-section-rules-please-read.html

We also have an app for this forum. The link to download the app is: Discussion Forum for iPad Users for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

You can download the manual for your iPad here http://help.apple.com/ipad/6/ and here http://support.apple.com/manuals/ and in iBooks search for "iPad user guide for" and you will find free comprehensive manuals for iOS 4, 5, 6, etc.

If you have other Apple products or are interested in other Apple kit then why not join our sister forum too at http://www.appleforums.net/ and for iPhone users, come and join in the discussion over at http://www.iphoneforums.net

Hi, and welcome to the forum. As scifan said, you can easily go to and jail break that iPad1 on iOS 5.1.1.

I'd just like to add that I recommend you do a backup before upgrading so you can get all your stock iPad stuff back after you upgrade. That way, you'll still have your app data (e.g. game progress), settings and so on.

Then, right after you upgrade (restore from NEW at the start), go ahead and jail break it BEFORE you put anything back on it. It is my opinion/experience that jail breaks work best on near empty iPads.

After the jail break, use the "restore from backup" function in iTunes to put the backup in the iPad. iTunes will do its magic and you'll be all set.

I would not commend using any backup program for your Cydia tweaks. Given that you are coming from a much older iOS, my recommendation is to make note of which ones you have, upgrade to iOS 5.1.1, jail break and then go put the tweaks on in small numbers. That way, you can ensure tweaks will still work with the new iOS.

Good luck on your upgrade and let us know how you get on.

Marilyn

P.S. And, since you talk about a jail broken iPad, I've taken the liberty of moving your post over to the Hacking section. Thanks for your understanding.

Also, to add in my 2c, restoring a 3.x backup onto a 5.x device may well be problematic. You are going from one of the very first versions of IOS on the iPad1 straight to the very last. If things don't quite work out as expected, you may need to bite the bullet and set the device up as "new" on 5.1.1, rather than restoring your backup.

Apple are very good at supporting upgrades, but they expect you to upgrade from the current to next release, as they release them to the public. Also, being jailbroken, a great deal of things have changed in the underlying architecture of the jailbreak since those days and some tweak settings will come back across in the backup (although none of the jailbreak components themselves will).

Yours is the first example I have seen (that I can remember) going from 3.2.2 going to 5.1.1 ;)
