Backgrounder (turn on badges)?

I have had issues with Backgrounder causing my iPad to give me a "white apple" screen when restarting the device and have had to restore each time. At this point I'm not running it any longer but was wondering about the "turn on badges" note in the compliant list as I am sure I didn't do this as I don't know how to do so. How do you turn on badges?
