First, hello and welcome to the forum! :)

Second, you've obviously done no searching here - there are numerous threads/post already available on the iPad batteries - please use the search functions -

Finally, check Apple Support - there are plenty of KB articles available on using the iPad battery - check THIS ONE for a start - good luck and please post back if your question(s) is not answered by the above!

This has been my battery-charging system:

1) On a day to day or week to week basis, I charge it when the battery gets to about 30% or so. I let it fully charge back up before using it again.
2) Roughly once a month, I let the battery run completely down, to say 2-3% and then I fully charge it. This helps to calibrate the battery meter so the readings are more accurate.

Of course, you can charge it when it gets to 40% or even 60% and you wont hurt anything. The batteries are pretty robust in these things from my experience. Basically, charge whenever you see fit. Once in a while, let it run down almost totally. Thats about it.

As far as lifespan of the batteries, I suspect we'll want the new version iPad that will be out by the time the battery dies(~ 3 years?)

I'm not impressed with my iPad 2 battery life at all. I've followed all the advice to minimize battery usage and still do not get the same life as my original iPad. I do have 3G in the iPad 2 but turned it off for a week and I still had to charge it every 2 days.

How many hours a day do you use it? I've had mine at work for the last 3 days. It started off at 100% and I've been on it lots (games, books), probably about 8 hours total and it's now at 30%. FWIW
