BBC iplayer downloads keep slowing on downloads

I have an issue with downloading content to the BBC iplayer app on my ipad 4

The download starts fine, but after a few moments, the dl speed slows right down ( goes from say, 5 minutes remaining to 20 minutes, then a few moments later, 3 hours!)

If I return to the home screen and then back to the app, it speeds right up again for a few moments, then slows again. It'll keep doing this until the download's complete

I've had no issues downloading anything else to the ipad (podcasts, etc) so I don't think it's my connection.

Anyone else had similar?

Thanks, but the only setting I can seem to access is for hi/lo q downloads.

I'm using iPlayer version 3.0.0.51 and ios7

I use hi q as I want the better picture on the retina display.
