Best resolution and video encoder to convert dvd video to ipad??

I have dvd's I would like to convert and put on my iPad. I have read the best resolution to take up the entire screen on the iPad is 1024 x 480. Does anyone know of a free converter that would do this. I would like to convert directly from the dvd disc.

Try the software called Handbrake. The best free converter I've ever used.

I will give it a try thanks. Was a right on the resolution though? 1024 x 480. Or is there a better resolution to use with SD video to fill up the entire iPad screen??
