No no no no no. The second you decided to mention to the forums it was a gift, you gave everyone a right to have an opinion on what a thoughtless selfish thing you did in taking your iPad back.
If you honestly think your wife went out and spent a huge chunk of money on something that would clearly make you smile on Christmas morning and then not care when you threw it back in her face by taking it back, you have problems my friend. Where I come from they call that, selfish and ungrateful.
In response to your actual question, Apple, historically prefer to sell their brand new products from the Apple stores when they first come out. Presumably this is a move to maximise profits directly to Apple and gives their employees a chance of better job security.
Ps- my wife bought me an iPad for Xmas, I smiled allot at the thought and gesture and and it made my Xmas a better one for it. And I'm a 30yr old guy with children.
