Does the line remain stationary when you rotate the iPad from portrait to landscape mode? If it does, it could very well be a defect in the screen. If you have an Apple store nearby, you may want to take it in to be checked at the Genius Bar.

Try these basic troubleshooting steps:

Restart the iPad (turn off, then on again)
Reset it (press and hold Home and Power button at the same time until the Apple logo appears)
