Buy an IPad in US or in Italy?

I travel to Italy every year. Should I buy an IPad in the US and try to get a sim card in Italy? (I plan to leave the IPad there and buy one for the States).
Would it make more sense to spend much more and buy it in Italy if it's only going to be used there? Help, please.

If you leave the iPad in Italy then it would count as an import and you've have to pay import duty and VAT (Value Added Tax) when you take it into the country. Given the current rate of VAT and Import Duty this would significantly reduce any cost advantage of purchasing it in the United States.

Thanks so much for the tax information. I did not think of the import...I also thought that for local support I may need the retailer nearby.
I appreciate any other suggestions.

Wherever you buy, they'll give you the local charging plug. The U.S. plug and the Italian plug are different. Might as well buy on in the U.S. and one in Italy if you're going to buy two. Then you'll get the right plugs for both countries.

Apple will provide support whichever country you take it to. May be worth looking at exchange rates to see which country is best to buy in.
