What I am wondering is how it makes a call or sends SMS if you only have a data plan with no form on voice or text communication on the SIM. Yes, I'm waiting for iPad 2 JB amd hopefully this might work with it!

It won't work with just a data plan. The website says you need a voice and data plan.

You can make calls using Vonage. It's an iPhone app, but I use it on the ipad as well
