Camera connector question

I am thinking of buying the camera connector,but am concerned about the downloaded pictures consuming all my memory. When I connect the camera and move pictures to the iPad, are they optimized/compresses first, or are they moved in their original size. My DSLR shoots about 4MB pictures. Then, are they sync'ed back to iTunes in compressed format?
