Cannot get mail message

New user to ipad...keep getting error message when trying to connect to gmail.. Error message is cannot get mail..imap gmail not respnding. This has just started to happen, was ok for a couple of weeks when first purchased. Wifi is on...and can connect thru 3g...but have to keep trying a few times...sorry. If long winded have not used this before

I get the same message frequently on both iPhone & iPad but all other devices (netbook, laptop, etc.) have no problem getting email. It's got to be an Apple problem, such as too much traffic etc. any ideas???
