Cannot send mail

Am a novice with my ipad2 so please keep explanations simple.
When I try to send or forward an email a window opens saying,
Cannot send mail
The connection to the out going server "smpt.gmail.com" failed additional out going mail servers
Can be configured in settings mail contacts settings.

The first thing to check is that its smtp.gmail.com, and not just a spelling error in your post (you put smpt)
