Thank you Giradman you have explained how it works admirably. Now I know --- it's a big glorified mobile phone -- except you can't make phone calls!! I will now look forward to it's arrival from Santa.

LOL! Well, the iPhone is just a 'midget' iPad w/ a phone - But, by using FaceTime or Skype ​on the iPad, audio and/or video calls can be made while 'on line' using VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) - visited my MIL a few months ago and she was able to talk & see her grandson on my iPad (using her home Wi-Fi network) - SO, you'll discover plenty of uses for your new toy!
