I want to load a series of pdf files from my Macbook on to my iPad in a number of separate folders. How do I set up the various folders on the iPad - I have the pdf files in these separate folders on my Macbook, and I have managed to copy one group via iBook. But I cannot work out how to copy the subsequent folders. Can anyone guide me please?

Unfortunately, you cannot set up a folder system on the iPad as you are accustomed to on a computer. The iPad is not designed to have a central repository for files so that a program can go "dip into it" when you want to open a file.
All files have to be within an app and then a]can only be accessed by that app. Most apps allow for an "Open In..." function, whereby you can select a file (within an app) to open in another. The only thing is that the file is copied to the new app (the first app still has the file, also). This could cause problems with duplication if you don't keep up with it.
With that in mind, you might want to just move all your PDFs over in iBooks. Then, within iBooks, there is an option/function to sort books by a category you choose. So, that might still work for you ... ?

Both GoodReader and PDF Expert can maintain folder hiarchies. They also have the ability to sync folders from Dropbox. You can use this to both transfer and keep your PDF files organized.
There are other apps that will do the same (or similar) things, but these are the two I am familiar with.
If you want to keep using iBooks you can create Collections to organize them but you will have to do the organizing on the iPad. Ther is no way to transfer them in a folder hiarchy. Though if you import the PDF files to iTunes on the computer first you can sync them all at once.

Yeah it can be possible but you should have an app on the iPad which will enable the PDF viewing and editing. There are so many apps but i would suggest you to go with the GoodReader.

This was a feature that was very easy to do on my current Android tablet.
So when I purchased my iPad, I was a bit disappointed I could not accomplish this.
I searched quite a few apps, and came across an app that's turning out to be one of my favorite apps.
It's called iFiles. It allows me to upload and download multiple files to and from my cloud storage. The app also has it's own built in file structure, so I'm able to create folders and sub-folders. What I like most about the app is that it can download files from my Dropbox account, and allow me to place them in whatever folder I like within the folder structure of the app. I can also copy entire folders. I can select the folders I want to copy from my Dropbox account, and select where to paste them on my iPad. All files within those folders are copied as well.
I cam across similar apps, but this one seems to be my favorite so far.
I now feel better about my iPad purchase. If it wasn't for this app, I probably would have returned my iPad for a new Android tablet.

Just posting to agree with you about iFiles. In fact, it's the app I use to send stuff over to my computer if I don't want to bother hooking them up with the USB cord.
Oh, and the other cool thing is that it can "talk" to another iDevice that's also running the app and you can transfer files between iDevices. I've done many a transfer between iPad and iPhone.
So, yeah - its right up there only list of favorites, also. Thanks for mentioning it. 'Preciate it.
