I dropped it!!! Thankfully if made it through with just a few (really not even noticeable minor minor scratches). Is this going to effect the iPad later?

So ~ does it have a few scratches or is the screen cracked? Or both?

Thank you for asking they are very small, minor scratches. About three scratches approximately .5 inches to one inch. You can't feel it with your finger, but you can "hear" it and barely feel it with your fingernail only. I am certain no one can see it unless you are looking for them. It is just really annoying to me and I am mad at myself because I am so careful, or at least I thought I was. I am just waiting on my hard case from Trident. Everything works, cameras as well. Don't know if these scratches will effect it's performance later. Like if dust or junk can get in and work their way below the scratches and start effecting the inner components of the iPad. MAD at myself! Again, thanks.

If they really are surface scratches only, then I can't see any way that dirt or dust could penetrate the iPad as a result. Many iPad screens have surface scratches - perhaps as a result of the screen being in contact with a sharp object when being transported - and there have been no subsequent problems as a result. It's a cosmetic thing only.

Don't worry about it and enjoy your iPad.

Thank you very much. I went ahead and bought a Zagging screen protector. Only 24 hours a little too late! I just wanted something to help reduce the chances of further scratches and I figure that it will also prevent dust or whatever from getting in the cracks. It does distort the screen a bit. But all of the bibles are out, but it's a little fuzzy. Thanks for replying!

My son has just dropped his new IPad. Any DIY solutions for a cracked screen?

Unless you have AppleCare+, Apple will charge about 1/2 the cost of a new iPad to repair it. There are a number of places to buy a replacement screen. Great care is required in replacing the screen because of the danger of damaging the screen connectors and the WiFi antenna connectors. iFixit offer instruction, tools, and parts.

The best solution we have for fixing a broken iPad is to make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store....you will not need your receipt as they can look up all relevant info at the store. They will most probably offer to replace your iPad but for a cost...it's normally half of the original cost of the iPad. If this is fine by you, make sure you do a complete backup of your iPad before you go.

There are other businesses that can do this for you which will probably be cheaper but be aware that this will void your warranty, but then again your warranty would already be voided because of the drop. If you do replace with Apple, your warranty is reinstated. I have also heard many members who have gone the cheaper route then find that their WiFi will not work as this has been damaged by the replacing of the screen.

In addition, you can also contact Apple customer service. Here are some great web sites to aid you in your repair search:

Contact Info:

Apple Support:

Check for Warranty:

If you don't live in the USA, here is a link whereby you can select your country and then be directed to the Apple site for your country:

http://www.apple.com/choose-your-country/

We are not affiliated with Apple (other than sharing our enthusiasm for the iPad) - all we can do to help you is to point you in the direction of these links.

As this is all we can do to help, this thread is closed.

Good luck and thank you for your understanding.
