We are going on our first cruise to Alaska in June. I have read that they charge for Internet access. If I take my iPad do I put it on airplane mode or turn it off completely?

You can still use your iPad on the cruise-just turn airplane mode on, which will turn your wifi off. You are all set than.

Have a great time on your cruise and Welcome to the forum.

You actually don't have to do anything to the iPad if you don't access the email or Internet apps. Even if you leave wifi on and access these apps, it won't connect and charge you unless you sign up for the ship's Internet plan. And yes, Internet on a ship is expensive. I recently returned from a cruise and it was $100 for 240 minutes. So you need to connect, download email, and disconnect. Service speeds are VERY slow as you are actually sending and receiving via satellite.

Cruiseship Internet is slow and expensive. You can access Internet in ports. The local libraries have wifi for your iPad. In Juneau the library is beside the dock. I have accessed it from the ships deck. I know most of the wifi accesses for the Alaska runs.
Enjoy your Alaska cruise.

Cruise ships can charge whatever they please for Internet access at sea, they have a captive market.
