Dad Devises VerbalVictor iPad App to Help His Son Communicate

The Huffington Post reports today on the story of a Winston-Salem man called Paul Pauca, who has invented an iPad app called Verbal Victor to help his five-year-old son Victor communicate. Victor has a rare genetic illness called Pitt Hopkins Syndrome, which delays development of several skills, including speech. This inspired his father Paul, and some of his students at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, to design an iPad and iPhone app that helps Victor and other similarly disabled children to communicate.

The VerbalVictor app works by enabling parents to take photos and record phrases to accompany them. These are then turned into “buttons†on the screen for Victor to touch when he wants to communicate. So for example, when Victor wants to go out into the garden to play, he will touch a picture of the back garden with the accompanying message “I want to go outside and playâ€. In this way, he can signal to his parents, teachers and or carers what he wants.

“It opens up his mind to us, because he can show us what he’s thinking,†Victor’s mother told The Huffington Post.

The app is due to be on sale in the App Store from next week for $10.

It does seem to have great patience on this work dad has doen for his son, and dad devices will definitely help to his son as it looks very perfect to give a speech to that son from ipad.
