Digital AV Adapter Help

Hi just purchased a HDMI Av adapter/cable so that I can play 720p off my ipad 2 to my T.v

I use AVplayer Hd ,My question is when i watch films this way I get black letterbox /lines on the left and right instead of the normal 16.9 top and bottom

My t.v options do not let me to stretch the screen in the horizontal direction

Is this down to apple standard screen size or is there way round it to get full screen on my t.v????

Try setting your TV resolution to 720p or automatic. My TV, a Sony, does it automatically, so it fills the screen.
