Hello Don - welcome to the forum! But you really need to provide more information, at least the iPad model and the iOS installed; e.g. my new iPad Air 2 has no 'side switch'.

But just for starters, if your iPad has a 'side switch' and it is set to lock rotation, has the switch been enabled for that function? If not, then check the 'Control Panel' is see if that function is 'on' - Dave
