Document transfer

My company wants to put iPads on the shop floor (well protected) and update them regularly for QC changes. We thought that by using the SD adaptor we could easily transfer PDF's and Excel files. When I tried it earlier it did not work and it appears that only Photos can be transferred.
Is there anyway around this?
