E-mail closes abruptly

We have encountered an issue with these e-mail; when we touch the application at the bottom of the iPad, it opens then abruptly closes. Has anyone else encountered this and how have you addressed this?

Try removing your email account and set it up again

That worked...but resetting up the mail account is painful...albeit not as painful as having to re-establish the mail app.
