Can anyone advise what the difference is between the trashcan icon and the little cube icon with minus sign inside and a downward arrow on top? Having inadvertently touched the latter is there any way to recover a "lost" email? Many thanks - an iPad newcomer.

Are you talking about the icon that's to the left of the trash can icon (it sort of matches the description you give but, I know, it's notorously difficult to describe icons!). If so, this is the 'move email' icon. It enables you to move an email from one folder to another (even from one email account to another).

If you touched it accidentally and then did some 'other stuff' after that, it's probably only moved the email you're after to another folder. Have a look through your folders (I hope you don't have too many!) and you should locate it.

Then you can use the 'move' icon again to restore the email in question to its 'rightful place'!

If I've misunderstood the icon you're referring to, please forgive me and let us know and we'll try and help.

Good Luck and enjoy your iPad.

Thanks for your response Tim. No it's not the move to another folder icon that looks like a folder with a downward arrow inside it. When I open my e-mails it sometimes appears next to that icon - it looks like a cube with a minus inside and the downward arrow is on top.

Could that be the Archive button?

I don't remember, because I never could FIND where stuff moved to Archive actually was - so I removed that option from e-mail (just have "regular" delete).

If not that, then I don't know what because I don't see that icon in my mail right now.

Marilyn, I think you have got it! Unfortunately when I touched the icon the mail I wanted to keep disappeared down a "plug hole" and because I wasn't connected wirelessly at the time, I assume it has been lost. Continuing a search on the server has not found it. Now I need to find your way of disabling the archive function!

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. For each email account you've got:

Select it (by pressing it). A dialog box will open and you will see the option - near the bottom, where you can turn Archive on/off.

This doesn't mean I can help you find your lost messages. I still can't find mine! :D

Good luck.

Marilyn

Thanks Marilyn, I have turned the archive option off now - hopefully I won't lose any more e-mails! Thanks for all your help.

I do use google mail - is this where the archive goes? No, just checked, my missing mail is not there - I guess it might have worked had I been on line when I hit the button!

I do not use the email icon and would like to move it to another page. I use Chrome for gmail.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

If you would like to move any icon just long press on it until it starts to jiggle and an X will appear on each app (an X will not appear on native apps as these cannot be deleted). Then hold your finger on an icon and slide it to the edge of the page and the next page will load, lift your finger. You can also slide an app onto another one which will then create a folder, while they are still jiggling you can rename the folder also and a folder can hold up to 20 apps. Just press the home button to return to a normal screen.

Thanks. On my iPhone I could move the mail icon but I guess not the iPad.

I do not understand your statement. You were just told you can in the post above. All app icons and web page shortcut icons can be moved and also foldered.

Are you holding your finger on the icon long enough to actually 'grab' it before then trying to move it? Pause a little on the icon and then slide it.
