External Backup - How To and Implications

My hard drive is getting overloaded with iTunes media. I am using a PC.
I am thinking of backing it up to an external hard drive and eliminating it from my hard drive.
2 questions:
Do I simply drag and drop the iTunes folder under My Music to the external hard drive?
If I do this, do I need to keep the external hard drive connected to the computer every time I sync with my iPad Air?
Anything else I need to know to not lose my media?

I also backup my data in HD and Cloud Backup Solution. Last time my HD is corrupted but with the help of Cloud Backup I restore my all data. I use CloudBacko Cloud Backup for saving my data. I think you can also backup your data in Cloud Backup solution. Thanks
