Facts R Fun

At the 1912 Olympics, a marathon runner quit and went home to Japan without telling it to the officials. He was considered a missing person in Sweden for 50 years. In 1966, he was invited to complete the distance. His time was 54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes and 20.379 seconds.

Does anyone find this funny? I do.

[h=4]The largest single living thing (apart from reefs constructed of multiople polyps) was a mushroom fungus in Oregon that grew to 2,200 acres. Good luck sleeping tonight.[/h]

and I sold 2 to one guy and 1 to a woman...lol

Now is that the WR for the longest time taken to complete any race?

There is also something awesome that happened on 9/11 and many people don't know about. On 9/11, the US closed down all their air space. However, planes destined to land at NYC or Washington needed a place to land.

Gander was a Canadian town in northeastern Canada. The Gander Intl. Airport served as a major refueling point for transatlantic flights formerly. On 9/11, around 42 aircrafts holding passengers equivalent to 66% of the local population emergency landed in Gander.

The people of Gander showed great kindness to the human spirit during this time. They set up an emergency stay, provided cot and clothes, and helped people to contact loved ones. One woman crawled into the cargo spaces to care for the animals that had been stowed away. One man gave the keys to his car to a young couple so that they could take a break from the emergency shelter.

This incident is explained in detail in the book - The Day The World Came to Town.

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers, you will always find people who are helping" - Fred Rogers.

- a tribute to the spirit of these Canadians.
