As everyone waits for iOS 4.2 to become available as it slowly rolls out across the world this Monday (still no update so far here in the UK! Argh, hurry up!), one interesting piece of news that has already emerged is that the incredibly useful Find My iPhone MobileMe feature is now free, and comes as standard in iOS 4.2 for any iPad, iPhone 4 or fourth-generation iPod touch. We’ve all read the stories by now about how well it worked when it was part of MobileMe, so it’s excellent news to find that the feature is now free and can be activated in just a few simple steps once iOS 4.2 is safely installed on your iOS device.

In case you’re not already familiar with this feature, it enables you to pinpoint the location of your lost device on a map, display a message on the lost device’s screen, set a passcode lock remotely and initiate a remote wipe to delete all your data if the worst comes to the worst, although with the proviso that should you find your device again you can always restore all the erased data from your last backup.
