Garmin Maps

I need to purchase and download UK maps from Garmin for an upcoming trip and don't have my Mac Book Pro with me. Wondering if I could download the maps to my iPad 2 while at my hotel and then transfer those maps to an SD Micro card for use with my Garmin GPS when we get home. The hotel has free high speed Internet and we don't at home. I'm not sure iPad 2 can handle file downloads outside of iTunes and then successfully transfer those file to another source. I do have the camera connection kit.
