Is there a way for my gmail calendar and my exchange work calendar to be displayed as 1 single calendar?

Yes, just goto the calendar app and press the calendars button and you can select which calendars to show.

i know i can SHOW both calendars.....what i want is to have ONE calendar with both of my personal appointments (gmail) and my professional appointments (exchange).

Is that what you want? Most people like to keep their professional and private calendars seperate, with the single view at least allowing you to see appointments form both, but if you want to merge them then the above link has a couple of solutions.
