Google maps help please

Hello, I'm new to the iPad, but am having trouble with google maps.

When I swipe to move across the app, nothing happens. When I zoom in, it takes me to another country (to Mexico, I'm in Australia).....or the middle of the ocean! Please help. This app on my iPhone is fine. All other apps are working fine on the iPad as well, it's just google maps with this problem.
