Gorilla Glass

Lunar, your description of putting the protector on kinda stresses me out. Maybe that is why I don't want to use one.

LOL.. well you can't say I don't give a full descriptive reply.. and I agree with you to some extent.. it really is an art putting them on successfully.

That's exactly why I didn't attempt doing this myself as a 1st time Apple buyer, I went from the Apple store directly to a kiosk that sold the protective sheets & the guy "applied" it like he was tinting windows... cleaned it, sprayed it & squeegied the moisture out.

Though not as susceptible to scratching as plastic - the iPhone/iPad glass is still very, very prone to it. I've had some change in my pocket scratch it - too long a fingernail on my typing hand - even particulates in a piece of paper towel leaves minuscule scratches. Those of you who are so confident - just tip your screen at the right angle in the light where the surface can be seen and I'll bet you have WAY more scratches than you think. I've had reps at Best Buy tell me the main reason for not giving top value on trade in is scratches on glass and other etchings in the surface of front or back.

So a super thin cover is the call for at least iPhones. I agree - iPads tend to get a little more protected - but as I said earlier - I still feel like I need to cover their fronts.

Each to his own.

I would be willing to bet that some of you that think you have scratches on your screen just have not wiped hard enough. I get marks that appear as scratches but they are not. The phone is so old now I don't care much anymore, but I've looked and looked and there are no scratches on the screen. After I wipe it down, it's a perfect as new piece of glass. Now before you ask, I have really good eyesight, and screens are important to me. There is definitely a coating that will get worn off - but it really has not been a concern - as I just wipe the phone screen on my pants and it's good to go. Definitely avoid wiping down with chemicals.

It's just easier than getting stressed out about bubbles from a piece of plastic on a screen - plastic that will be way easier to scratch from fingernails and such - and then you have to live with looking at the scratched up plastic until you can get it replaced for another $15-30. To me that seems like a waste of money, which over the life of the device will end up costing you more than any trade in value you can get back out of it in the very unlikely case that a piece of plastic will protect your screen from something that should not happen anyways.

I kept my HTC droid incredibly in my pocket with my keys for two years....not a scratch. Kept my iPad 2 with no screen protector for a year, no scratches. Android tablet, one year, no scratches. Nook Color, no scratches. No screen protection, no scratches. Why am I so special?

Warranty replacements, on the spot, with Zagg are $5 any time you want a fresh one for iPhone. You don't need a receipt. $15 for iPad. Zagg shields don't get scratched. Screens do. And in this discussion - no one's talked about your glass getting shattered on a fall. Though it's rare that would happen - the one time it does - you want protection. More for a phone than an iPad - though - I'll agree with that.

I believe you're not holding it at the correct angle to see your scratches. But I could be wrong. It's not an eyesight thing - it's a 'surface angle' thing. Not everyone can find it. Like finding the blindspot we all have in our eyes -- you really have to know how to look at the glass to see the surface. I'll decribe it in a post when I'm not driving..

Pretty good that they only charge you $5 replacement for a piece of plastic that costs 20 cents to make.

Screen protectors will do absolutely nothing to prevent your screen from getting shattered. I hope you were not trying to imply that it does.

Glass screens do not get scratched. Especially the gorilla glass that is used in these devices nowadays. Any kind of plastic will be a lot softer than glass and far more will scratch it than the screen. It's very simple and you only have to consider the surface hardness of the exposed material.

Don't worry I know how to look for scratches in scatter light. There are none. As I said before I have dropped this iPhone 4 about a half dozen times on none flat tile floor screen down. While I am amazed the screen did not shatter yet, I am even more amazed that I have no scratches. turns out the tile hardness is less than the glass. I doubt it would do as well if dropped on a diamond floor.

We'll just have to disagree that there is any value for the money from these hucksters that sell this stuff.

BTW never reply to me or any post while driving. It's just not that important and it could cost a life.

Oh.....so now one has to know how to hold the iPad at the right angle to see the hidden scratch.....dude....we know about to inspect the surface of a screen....there just ain't all these scratches. People must be going at their screens with ice picks.

Nope. Very easy to scratch Gorilla Glass too. Just do a simple google search on this topic and you'll find countless stories and pictures of the damage with even moderate use.. Use your device without a protector at your own risk. Doesn't matter to me. But to claim glass (even Gorilla Glass) doesn't scratch is just utter nonsense. I won't dignify the notion by debating any longer. Do what you will. :-)

I have had an Ipad and Iphone for a couple years with no screen protector....no scratches at all. I put one on when I first bought and couldnt stand it....took it off and decided to take my chances. Not needed, they only sell them because people buy them.

Dude....I'm not going to put your words or those of a bunch of Internet unknowns above my own first-hand experience. No way, no day.

+ 1.

The first time I used a screen protector was on a Palm. Later, I bought a Sony A700 DSLR, and a Zagg shield went on its LCD display. When I got my first iPad, Zagg shield. Ipad2, Zagg shield. Now that I have acquired the third gen iPad, I also Zagged it. BUT I had to return that one due to faulty screen. Best Buy told me to contact Zagg and they replaced it. While waiting for the Zagg to arrive, I started using the new iPad without a shield and it felt different--finger directly on glass. The Zagg had arrived and I still have not installed it on my iPad. It is a naked iPad (in a protective case) and going two months, no scratches.

This is one of those issues that I think boils down to preference and individual behavior. To this I say YMMV.
