Hard drive

Hi I have connected a external harddrive to my airport extreme I can see it on app filebrowser and connect to but will not let me see anything on hd. Any ideas please.? Also to add when boot up windows pc will then let me into hd but only when pc turned on which I do not want to keep doing. Help.
