Hi--welcome to the Forum!!

Well it depends on your question...I can run my trail tracker app in the background and iMessage someone, take a picture or check emails. If not that, I can have some music playing in the background. What exactly do you want to do?

Hello Pattyk... - welcome to the forum! Well, some features have already been explained, and the 'Multitask Bar' allows you to switch between apps, BUT if you are expecting to have two apps opened together on the same home screen and exchange data like on a standard computer, then you're out of luck - sorry.
