Help... iPad 3 apps opening on their own

Hi,

I bought a iPad 3 today.

Seemed to work fine when we first switched it on to go through the set up process. I switched it off for 20 mins after calling Telstra to activate the sim. When I switched it back on the apps began opening / closing / typing furiously all by themselves. I would close one, and another would spring open.

I have switched it on/off again. I have reset it. I have left it alone and It keeps on happening, though it has slowed down now and maybe one app will open now and then.

Is this a weird glitch? Do I need to return it?

Operating like that more or less out of the box, gets it back to where you got it from immediately. It sounds like a dud. Possibly a hardware fault with the touchscreen?
