Along with the info that Jolie gave you, the best way to transfer pics and music is through iTunes set up on your computer and than doing a sync to your iPad using the USB connector.

Have a look at this from iTunes:
iTunes 10: Download and Install iTunes

iTunes: Transferring media from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or iPod

Also, another way to transfer pics is by getting an app called Dropbox. Both on your computer and also your idevice. You can simply drag and drop pics to a file and once your iPad connects to wifi, the Dropbox app will do a proper sync and your pics will show up. You can than decide if you want to save it on your camera roll.

A third is to email the pics to yourself.

Many ways to do this.
