I want to be able to have the video of my lecture recording from university playing in the background while I type lecture notes on the ipad notebook, and I would like to be able to switch to the video again if I want to see a slide, then type the notes. But whenever I try to switch to the notebook app, the video stops. I bought my ipad mostly for this purpose because I thought it worked much like a small computer, but I'm afraid I might have been wrong!!

Any thoughts on what to do??

Thanks in advance for your help.

Apps on iOS devices are sandboxed and with very few exceptions can't run simultaneously. One of the few exceptions is the music app, which allows music to play in the background while using other apps. Unfortunately the video app is not one of the apps that can continue to run while using another app. What you want can't be done on a stock iPad.

Oh dear, that's very sad! I really should have done my research more thoroughly before I bought it :( I have a Mac and it's so good I assumed the ipad would be just a user friendly. You'd think the folks at Apple would have thought of this.

The sand boxing of iOS apps is a security measure by Apple. It's because of this that there is no known virus that can infect a stock iPad.
