How to read word document attched to e mail

Hi
Wondering if anyone could please help
I've been sent an e mail with a word attachment but don't seem to be open attatchment
I have installed good reader but also struggling with this
Would be most grateful if anyone could help
Only a couple of days into iPad ownership so please be gentle

In the Mail app, you should see the attachment as an outlined box. Press the box and the attachment should open.

Sometimes, if the files are large, that outline will be a dotted outline/box (because the file has not fully downloaded). You'll have to press it once to finish the download and then you can press it again to get it to open.

Tried to do that but can't seem to open MS word doc
Gives me option to open in good reader but this ALS fails to open MS Word doc

Now, that's odd (cause I had just opened a Word document - in .xlsx format) before I answered.

So, try the old standard - reboot the iPad. To do so - Hold both the power and home buttons until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo then appears (the slide to unlock screen may or may not appear). Once the logo appears, release the buttons. After a time, your homescreen will appear. Please note that it may take some time for the Apple logo to appear or for your homescreen to appear (or both). This is normal. Eventually, the homescreen will appear.

See if that helps any. Again, please let us know how you're doing.

When I open the email, the Word doc is sent as attachment, when I tap the icon I get two choices. 'done' button or 'open in good reader' when I try open in GR it comes up with the message file format not supported

I believe Goodreader still doesn't support .docx files (newer MS Word file type). If that's what the file is, see if the sender can save the file in an older format, (MS Word '03, etc.). That will save it as a .doc file and you should be able to open it.

FWIW Pages for iPad supports .docx files.

If you only want to read the document there is an app called Office To PDF which has worked perfectly for all office files I have thrown at it so far.

Gosh, Tim, so picky...

Yeah, I meant .docx. That's what I get for whipping off the file extension without thinking! My excuse is that Microsoft made file extensions too long!
