I cannot initiate message on Facebook

I no longer can initiate a new message in Facebook on my iPad. I can select one and can choose whom I will be sending it to but cannot type or send the message. I can however reply to a message that has been sent to me. This was working but for past month or so cannot. I can send them from my computer so something with the iPad. Thanks for any suggestions.
