I messaging from IPad 2 to an iPod please

Im trying to imessage with my friend on her iPod from my iPad but although I have her contact details on board ( and my other friend iMessages her from her iPhone) I can't do it, am I doing something wrong or is there something I should of done bt havnt thank you in anticipation Mel
