Ios 5 notifications question

The notification feature seems to work OK; I can pull down the new Android-like thing from the top and see my notifications. It's far less intrusive than the pop ups that appeared in he previous system.

However, there doesn't seem to be any icon or anything that appears to tell you you have new notifications, which means you have to keep pulling it down to see if there's anything there.

Am I missing something?

I don't think you are missing anything. Mine is the same way

I think this is just a place to store the notifications - you will still get them on the lock screen if your device was locked os as a notification bar at the top if you are in an app. I think it is good practice to check the notification centre each day though as it will list what is coming up in the next 24 hours.
